Field Trip//Austin Photographer

You are never too old for a field trip!! I took a great field trip with my Illustrative photography class to 3 photo studios in Dallas, Texas. We went from biggest studio to small (3000 sq feet is not small!!). And boy did we learn a lot!!

One of the photographers we got to meet and visit with was Jean Ann Bybee, the author of Food Styling (photos from my phone above). Jean Ann and her husband Brad were so gracious and shared some of their tips with us on what equipment they use (and why), props, and gave us good advice on important things we tend to forget (like treating people with respect, no matter who they are). They were down to earth and made us feel right at home. They have a new book coming out and I can't wait to get my hands on it!

We also met with photographers, Jim Bowie, Mark Bumgarner, and Jeff Davis. They were great and shared a lot of information on the changes from film to digital, social media for photographers, and they even sold me a tripod that they didn't need anymore! What a bargain!! Their tips on how to do photography on a budget are priceless and will definitely be put to good use. The best part about visiting with them was not just that they were fun and entertaining, but that they gave important information on what we as photographers should really expect in the industry.

We also went to R&J studios where the "Big Guys" (JCPenny's, etc) get their catalog photography done. (See the picture with the couch!) It was huge and an overwhelming experience to see how the big companies work. There are not many large studios like theirs left, but oh boy, what a thrill to see it!!

Everyone we visited are amazing photographers and I am grateful that they took the time to visit with us and share their knowledge. It's photographers and companies like them, who share their knowledge and encourage the rest of us, that make me aspire to do better work and educate everyone on what good photography is!

A special thank you to all of them.

And HUGE Thank you to my awesome professor Tom Grant! Thank you Tom for setting this trip up and for showing us another side of photography that we probably never would have seen otherwise! It was eye opening and every photography student should have to take this trip!
